Tari Saman Dance
The Saman Dance was the first item of the day and it was awesome!
During the performance, 16 students knelt down in a row on the floor and made different kinds of torso movements accompanied by a song. Dance movements include the clapping hands, slapping chests, slapping hands on the floor, etc.
The dance started off with slow movements and it increases its tempo gradually to great speed and finally come to a sudden stop.
All 16 of them managed to co-ordinate their dance movements and the increasing tempo of the song did not pose a problem to them.
Kudos to the 16 of them for all the hard work and effort they put into practicing and memorizing the various torso movements!

Kostum Tradisional
Many would say that traditional costumes are a form of representation of a culture of a place. This is indeed true as we saw for ourselves during the presentation by the “Traditional Costumes” team. It was truly an eye-opening experience as we got to see many different traditional costumes that we rarely see or have not seen before. Traditional costumes from different regions in Indonesia such as Bali, Riau, Padang and Yogyakarta were presented. The costume from the regions in Indonesia each has a distinctive characteristic and design. The costumes are mostly brightly coloured with intricate embroideries. What left the deepest impression with me was the introduction of the cannabis tribe in Dayak and the 3 pound bridal headdress from Padang! Pakaian pakaian was indeed indah sekali nevertheless. We got to learn more about the different ethnic groups and the diverse cultures that Indonesia has. The wonderful presentation by the “Traditional Costumes” team was indeed able to give us a more in depth look into one part of the cultures of people in Indonesia.

"The drama play was absolutely fantastic! The plot was simple, yet original and funny. The actors and actresses were confident despite having picked up Indonesian recently. The incorporation of various songs also brought the comedy closer to the audience, may they be from English, Mandarin or Indonesian speaking community. An epic and praise-worthy performance! Bagus sekali!"
"I felt that the drama performance by fellow peers of mine from this module was hilarious and wonderfully crafted. This is due to the quick use of common Indonesian lingo we often use in class, and not to forget, the use of songs which we are able to relate to at the precise moment. Through this performance, I was able to identify that acting using the Indonesian language is tough because of the little exposure we get, however, they managed to pull it off with the use of jokes and hand-made props. Therefore, I would like to thank this group for their effort in putting up such a great show which truly is a highlight for this Project that entertained everyone."

The angklung performance was amazing. The introductory part was really interesting as they shared information about anklung, for example, how to hold an angklung, and it was eye-opening for those who had never played or even seen an anklung before. We were surprised that the students managed to pick up a new instrument, the angklung, in such a short period of time and they could even play a number of songs. We especially liked the song that they played, “Topi Saya Bundar”, which we had learnt during our tutorial classes. Many of us were able to sing along during the chorus, making it an enjoyable and interactive performance.
The overall performance was a flawless one. We thank the students for their effort and for giving us a great performance. They really deserve a huge round of applause! :)

For me personally, the Maluku dance was one of the highlights of the LAB1201 showcase as it was not only captivating, but also brought a sense of excitement and danger in it's performance. What impressed me the most was the prescision and cooperation required to execute the dance. One small mistake or mis-timing would have resulted in the students getting their limbs clipped by the poles. It could be seen that countless hours of practice was put into the performance as the students excuted the dance to perfection. Given the short time they had to practice together, it was truely impressive. It was definitely and enjoyable performance to watch!

The menyanyi group put up a spectacular performance for us that night! Apart from singing, the students also incorporated a little role play and dance, which was unlike conventional singing performances that one would expect. The group sang three Indonesian children songs- Naik Delman, Bangun Tidur and Satu Satu. There was also a solo performance by one of their members, Ernest who performed Laskar Pelangi. Even though it was the last performance of the night and everybody was exhausted from the day’s preparation, they managed to capture the audience’s attention, drawing cheers, laughter and even participation from the crowd with their hilarious performance. All in all, the menyanyi group’s performance was a fantastic end to the day LAB1201 students have been preparing for.
